Population First participated in the Genesis Film Project (GFP), a collaborative effort by MAM Movies, an international film organisation and the Peacock Project. It was a time-based film competition where 101 aspiring filmmakers were invited to make five-minute inspiring films on 101 NGOs in Mumbai within a limited time period of 101 hours from January 2 to 6, 2007. Their goal was to connect with charities working on social development issues and bring about awareness about them through the medium of films.

Filmmaker Anjolie Purat, from Mantras, her sister Shrimathi Madiman and cameraman Kalpesh were assigned to Population First. They made a film on Laadli, our girl child campaign against sex selection and gender discrimination. The film featured the work being implemented under the campaign. The film was made with the support of students of Elphinstone, K.J. Somaiya and Siddharth College.

Our film was selected amongst the best 25 and was screened at the film premier in Cinemax multiplex at Versova, Mumbai on January 9, 2007. Our film has also been selected the best film in the Women’s category. We were invited to the GFP Film Festival on February 4 held at Khalsa College, Matunga, Mumbai where the winning films were screened and filmmakers felicitated. Anjolie was awarded for her creation.

Project Genesis has been invited to the Cape Town Film Festival and is hoping to distribute the movies internationally.
