Population First announces the launch of  UNFPA-Laadli National Creative Excellence Awards for Social Change, a nationwide contest aiming to create a pool of promotion material that could be used for the campaign against sex selection. The Laadli campaign was launched with an objective of correcting the sex ratio through the involvement of  stakeholders supporting the cause and creating social consciousness to the issue collectively.

We invite entries nationally in any language, on or before March 31st (extended from January 30), 2008.

We have received over 100 entries, and heeding to the request from various quarters, we have now extended the last date to March 31, 2008.

The entries may include unpublished, not aired material, besides those published or aired in the past on the issue of sex selection.  All entries finally selected by the jury, which includes AP Parigi , MG Parmeshwaran, Pranesh Misra, Mohammed Khan , Pradeep Guha, Priti Nair, Ramesh Narayan and Tanuja Chandra, would be uploaded on a web-based, free open communication resource, dealing with the issue of sex selection.

All stakeholders/NGOs etc will be allowed free access to the same and could customize/modify them to suit their requirements to promote the cause. However, it will be mandatory for the users to acknowledge the original author/designer/maker of the materials in their customized versions of the same.

Seven categories have been defined for the same, which are:

      1. Story Boards of TVCs/Films/Animation Films (submitted in CD/DVD format)
      2. Slogans/Lyrics/Songs (should be mounted or submitted in CD/DVD format)
      3. Print Ads/Cartoons (mounted)
      4. Campaign Ideas (PowerPoint/Word)
      5. Posters/ Outdoor media*
      6. Photography *
      7. Innovative merchandise materials*

* mounted in A3 size or sent online, both in JPEG and Corel Draw version 11/12 format

Population First will handover a token honorarium to shortlisted entries and a certificate to all entries included on the website.

Eligibility criteria, terms & conditions:

  • The awards are open to creative professionals (that are a part of any organization), freelance professionals and individuals who are simply creative and believe in the cause.
  • There would be no restriction on the usage of colors, font type, size etc of the creatives. However, we recommend it is made well within a standard convenient size, while maintaining the original proportions.

 Basic guidelines to be followed:

  • Avoid use of language that portrays girls as objects of pity or devalues them.
  • Avoid using words such as foeticide, killing, murder, and genocide as this focuses attention on negative emotions of fear and violence, thereby turning the audience away from the issue at hand.
  • Avoid using gory, brutal and extremely gruesome images/photographs etc in the content of the promotional material.
  • Avoid language that holds the mother responsible for sex selection. She has very little control over the decision.
